Final Fantasy 1

For Final Fantasy on the PSP, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'Best magic per lvl (spoilers)'. White Magic level 1 Spells available: Blink, Cure, Dia. This is the classic Final Fantasy I party, and it became the default setups for Origins and Dawn of Souls. You have a very balanced party and access to all magics, as well as the high speed of the Thief. The biggest problem with this setup is that you only have one character that can brush off damage. Final Fantasy 1 & 2: Dawn of Souls (GBA) and Final Fantasy (PSP/Mobile) are both solid remakes with all the updates found in the PS1 version, plus some new dungeons and other extras.

The Red Mage is a true jack-of-all-trades. They can use the second-best Armor to the Warrior in the early game, can use most of the best Weapons until the mid-game, and get a decent selection of both Black and White magic. The initial downside to the Red Mage is that they're very expensive to maintain early on. Later on the downside is just that the Red Mage kind of fizzles out. They do get all the same nukes as a Black Mage except Flare, but their melee prowess falls significantly as the game goes on, making them a decent caster with less Spells per day.

A Red Mage is basically just as good as a White Mage when casting healing magic until level 9. His lower Mind score isn't really a liability at very low levels, and his expanded equipment list can be useful early on. They'll never be quite as good as Black Mages at casting damage Spells, but they can get some Elemental damage through in a pinch.
